Defenseworld.net interviewed Mr. Subodh Vardhan, Director Sales and Country Head, Government & Public Safety, Motorola India.

DW : Please describe your key products meant for the homeland defense and internal security applications?

Subodh Vardhan: MOTOROLA offers an extensive portfolio of solutions and devices to meet evolving public safety and security needs: This includes the MOTOA4 solutions portfolio which includes, interoperable two-way radio communications solutions, command and control solutions, identification and tracking solutions, information management of criminal justice and civil needs, and physical security and monitoring solutions encompassing: Project 25- and TETRA-compliant standards-based technologies; Mesh-enabled technology and networks; Data; Software-defined radio. Finally, the company is the industry leader in communication devices specially adapted to specific environments such as ATEX radios tailored for the Oil & Gas environment; there are also other industry-leading products such as APX and Covert radios that Motorola offers. The company also offers a range of wireless broadband products and solutions for mission-critical applications like wireless-video surveillance for traffic management as well as to strengthen the security apparatus for monitoring high traffic areas, and help public safety agencies gain pre-emptive capability and better safeguard lives.

DW : What are the latest technologies in this field, particularly that developed by your company?

Subodh Vardhan: Recent innovations include: The TCR1000 TETRA Radio - the smallest, full-function body worn TETRA radio available for covert operations; • The MTP850Ex TETRA portable terminal – a class leading ATEX device allowing use when in environments containing potentially explosive gas and dust; We design our devices to perform in extreme conditions, easy to use and fit seamlessly into users’ behaviors; Direct alignment (when possible) drives more focused, relevant R&D for best value; o More exploratory research to identify trends and develop future solutions for customers.

DW : What according to you are the market potential of Video Surveillance, Mission critical design, Public Safety Solution equipment and how much of this market has been tapped so far?

Subodh Vardhan: Motorola offers wireless security solution which is secure, reliable, robust. The recent terror strikes in Mumbai and other cities has made several Indian cities to consider setting up their own video surveillance network to monitor security, safeguard lives and national wealth. Despite the challenging economic environment it is expected that mission-critical communications and homeland security will remain high priorities. Public safety today is an increasingly complicated landscape with rising security threats and concerns. We see two key trends. One – governments and public safety agencies are increasingly looking at adopting wireless technologies for their needs, and two – they are also looking at partnerships with the private sector (PPP) to effectively collaborate and invest in such technologies. Broadband wireless-based security solutions can be used not only for traffic management, but also for monitoring activities in public spaces. The software or the analytics adds significant forensic capabilities whereby the system can be programmed for detecting several scenarios and give pre-alerts to the public safety agencies. Some of the capabilities include detecting a particular face, help in counting the number of people in the crowd, or detecting activities. Video surveillance system had proved to be helpful for London Police in identifying the bombers in the 7/7 attacks in London. The company is in talks with agencies involved in modernization and renovation of metro and non-metro airports for provision of surveillance equipments, not only for terminal buildings but on the airport perimeter and surrounding areas as well. Talks were on with the Delhi International Airport Limited, as also with that of Bangalore and Mumbai. Besides, the company has won the contract to supply mission-critical TETRA communication equipment to the three major international airports in Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad. Motorola also continues to work with various paramilitary and state Police forces to address their communication needs. All the three wings of the national defense forces also use our two way radios.

DW : What are the key markets you are aiming at-Asia, America, Middle East- please highlight?

Subodh Vardhan: Motorola has been the trusted leader in mission-critical communications for nearly 80 years and is trusted by public safety agencies the world over. Today, Motorola enjoys No.1 market share in mission-critical wireless communications globally and within each individual region for mission-critical equipment and solutions including both TETRA and APCO; Key customers include Airwave, the largest public safety network in the world, Hong Kong Police, Beijing Police; o TETRA – shipped more than 1 million terminals with over 350 systems sold in more than 90 countries (Asia: over 280K terminals delivered and sold over80 systems). Globally, more than600 Project-25 systems were deployed.

DW : Who will be your key customers- it is the government or the private sector?

Subodh Vardhan: Motorola’s key strength is to design and supply mission-critical communications solutions. Ever since Motorola installed the first radio receiver in the police cruiser in 1936, the humble 2-way radio has become a standard device used by public safety officers around the world. Solutions that we bring to market should help first responders save time, lives and property and carry on operations in a safe and secure manner, and be the true force multiplier that strengthens them in an intuitive manner. It is, therefore, important to understand customers’ needs and build/deliver purpose-built solutions for first responders. In line with this fundamental belief, the company has invested over $600 million in R&D in TETRA technology development alone. Our leading portfolio of solutions embraces all aspects of TETRA multi-system operations from network infrastructure, command and control to handheld radios, portables, vehicle based terminals and gateways. Motorola TETRA systems are trusted by over 350 agencies in over 90 countries. Motorola’s TETRA solutions in India continue their stronghold in the public safety sector while gaining fast traction in large and strategic infrastructure projects such as metros and airports. Recently, Motorola won contracts to build digital trunked radio communication network (TETRA) for Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad International Airports to serve their round-the-clock mission-critical communication needs. Motorola’s journey with TETRA contracts in India started with a Metro Project in 2001. Motorola’s communication solution also serves key rail network. Other verticals in the private sector where Tetra solutions can serve includes refineries, steel manufacturers, Mining etc.

DW : Are governments more inclined to spend on homeland defense and internal security equipment now than they were a few years ago?

Subodh Vardhan: Yes. Indications to this effect have been received by global communication firms, including the US-based Motorola, from public safety agencies, city administrations, local authorities, airports, metro rail corporations and private sector customers.

DW : What products will you be displaying at Global Security Asia and other shows going forward?
