Mr. Rafiq Somani

Country Sales Manager, ANSYS India

In an interview with Defenseworld.net, Mr. Rafiq Somani, Country Sales Manager, ANSYS India talks about Trends, best practices and applications of engineering simulation in aerospace and defence and growing role of simulation on R&D and product development in the aerospace and defence sector in India

DW : What is the role of engineering simulation in aerospace and defense sector?

Rafiq Somani: Engineering simulation is playing a huge role in various sectors, including aerospace and defense wing to the advantage of accurate prediction of design performance in the real world. The implementation of engineering simulation in defense helps provide vital benefits to the final product, be it a next-gen aircrafts, commercial space vehicles or unmanned systems. It plays a key role in achieving efficient fuel competence, managing environmental impact and converting pioneer design concepts into state of the art defense inventions

DW : What are the current trends in developing affordable ISR technologies?

Rafiq Somani: The demand for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) technology and infrastructure is growing significantly. As we move into an era of increasing importance for ISR technology, some of the trends include - Design for Affordability, Operation in Hostile Environments, Quantum Computing, Advanced Materials, Modularity and Consolidation. ANSYS engineering technology is ideal for developing smart and affordable intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) products. Simulation helps to reduce late-stage failures, deliver enhanced payload and platform capabilities (including unmanned systems) and improve performance of embedded electronic and communications technology. Integrated systems analysis and multi-physics simulation deliver robust platform and payload integration.

DW : How can companies adopting simulation early in the design cycle add significant gains on time and cost savings, as well as increase their competitive edge?

Rafiq Somani: In the intensely competitive business environment, companies are going the extra mile to ensure their products are the best in the industry. Customers across the globe require the best of products to be made available to them within a short time period at an affordable price. With the adoption of simulation in the early stages of design, industries can filter and validate development processes during the initial stages itself, when the charge of making modifications is negligible.  Not only can design deficiencies and possible improvements be detected early, but the overall system performance itself can be boosted significantly. With the use of technology, the overall scope of the design can be enhanced, to give the product a competitive edge.

DW : What is market share of R&D and product development in the aerospace and defense sector? How are the prospects in the coming years?

Rafiq Somani: It is difficult to comment on market share however ANSYS is the dominant player in the engineering simulation market. In specific, ANSYS is uniquely positioned to offer the A&D industry physics based simulation tool set that is capable of addressing the entire breadth of applications without compromising the three critical factors to A&D: Accuracy, Robustness and Speed. This breadth and depth of capability enables the aerospace and defense industry to meet with confidence the challenges of evolution in technology today and the revolution in the technology of tomorrow. Leaders in the A&D industry focus on process and people as much as tools and the ANSYS simulation framework support, training and services are recognized as key enablers for maximizing the return on investment in physics based engineering simulation.
