Algeria Orders New Russian Helicopters Worth $2.7 Billion

The Algerian Ministry of Defense has placed an order estimated $2.7 billion for 48 new Russian helicopters, according to Lenta.ru.

Under the agreement, Algeria will get 42 Mi-28N attack helicopters and 6 heavy transport Mi-26T2s, manufactured by Rostov-based Rostvertol, part of Russian Helicopters Holding Company.

In addition, the contract also includes upgrade of multi-role Mi-8 rotorcraft operated by Algerian army. These vehicles will be upgraded to Mi-8AMTSh version. The helicopters will be fitted with the armored cockpit, electro-optical surveillance and target recognition systems, and weapon carriage components.

Earlier, Algeria had bought 6 multi-role AW101 helicopters and 4 Super Lynx 300s, along with 4 W-3 Sokol from Poland.
