The Russian Navy has inducted into service a top-secret multi-purpose nuclear submarine, also known as the Project-885 Yasen-class submarine.

With its design inception was completed in 1991, the submarine is reportedly a rival to the US Navy's Seawolf-class and Virginia-class submarines.

“The submarine will have an advanced sonar system allowing it to detect enemy ships at an early stage. This increases its ability to detect enemy vessels at speeds far higher speed that those of its predecessors,” the Malakhit Marine Engineering Bureau company said in a statement.

New power supply and acoustic defense systems are developed to reduce noise and increase its stealth capability, said Malakhit.

The nuclear submarine is designed to hit both underwater and surface targets and also to launch missiles against ground targets.

Two major Soviet traditional features have been replaced by the submarine claiming to achieve the goal. The submarine introduces “one-and-half hull” instead of the double hull structure that would provide buoyancy and the single hull which are noiseless and ensures invisibility. The torpedo tubes location has been shifted from its traditional bow to the middle section of the submarine.

The submarine’s armaments include 3M55 Oniks (SS-N-26) and 3M54 (SS-N-27) Kalibr cruise missiles and conventional torpedoes, rocket-torpedoes and mines.

Russian military expert Igor Korotchenko, said, “The Russian navy wants to prevent the presence of foreign submarines in the region. Yasen-class submarines will follow U.S. Ohio-class strategic missile submarines and can launch cruise missiles against ground targets. Deploying permanent Russian Ground Troops force in local conflict regions can be carried out.”
