Egypt has agreed to buy 46 MiG-29 fighter jets worth US $2 billion from Russia, Vedomosti news daily reported Monday.

This is the largest order for MiG aircraft since Soviet disintegration. The purchase comes after Washington suspended future military hardware sales to Cairo after the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi in 2013. Egypt has turned to other suppliers including Russia for military purchase.

Egypt is likely to replace its aging fleet of MiG-21s and Chinese J-7s with MiG-29s.

According to Vedomosti news daily the deal will be a boon to MiG, securing a production portfolio that would keep MiG-29s rolling off the assembly line until around 2020, Konstantin Makienko, deputy director of the Moscow-based Center for the Analysis of Strategies and Technologies.
