India, Russia To Sign $5 Billion Deal For S-400 Air Defence Missile Systems

India will be signing a $5.8 billion contract with Russia on Saturday to acquire five new generation Russian S-400 Triumf air defence missile systems.

The agreement would be signed at an India-Russia summit due to take place in Goa of India.

"Following the results of the negotiations between our president and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, an agreement will be signed on the delivery of S-400 Triumf antiaircraft missile systems to India, as well as some other documents," Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov was quoted as saying by Tass News Agency Thursday.

"Part of the documents will be signed behind closed doors," he said.

In October 2015, India had decided to purchase the S-400 systems, which primarily have three kinds of missiles, with different capabilities. The missiles can fly at supersonic and hypersonic speeds to intercept all kinds of targets at ranges from 120 to 400-km.

The S-400 surface-to-air missile (SAM) system can "radar lock and shoot down" stealth fifth-generation fighters like the American F-35 jets, Russia experts said.

This procurement follows over an year after China sealed a $3 billion deal with Russia for acquisition of six S-400 batteries.

China is slated to get the S-400 batteries, which is designated `SA-21 Growler' by NATO.
