Indian Navy Decommissions Old Ships

The Indian Navy has decommissioned about more than quarter-century-old ships, INS Agray and INS Matanga, on 27 January in a ceremony at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai.

Agray was a Russian-built Project 1241 PE (Pauk II) anti-submarine corvette, which was converted into a patrol vessel and a trials platform for electronic warfare systems after being severely damaged by an onboard explosion in 2004, IHS Jane's 360 reported Monday.

Agray served with the IN for almost 26 years, while Matanga , an ocean-going tug built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders, served for 33 years.

Matanga undertook several roles including towing, salvage operations, coastal deployments, limited submarine rescue operations, external firefighting, and salvaging.
