Russia’s Eastern Military District To Operate New Air-Route Radar Complex In 2018

Russia’s Eastern Military District will begin operating new air-route radar complex Sopka-2 in the Zabaikalsky Krai from next year, the defense ministry announced today.

The complex will summarize and analyze air traffic data and is capable to identify each aircraft flying in a group.

The dual-purpose radar monitors airspace approaches to the Russian capital was first put into service with the 1st Air and Missile Defense Army in 2017.

The Sopka-2 is designed for use by air traffic control and airspace monitoring systems. The system has a circular view and is capable of detecting up to 300 airborne objects at a distance of up to 150 kilometers (93 miles) with an accuracy of 250 meters (820 feet).
