Russia will launch the development of S-500 Prometey surface-to-air missile/anti-ballistic missile system in 2018.

“The development of the transport machine, the loading vehicle, the loading and unloading equipment for the air defence missile system S-500 is to be launched in 2018,” Sergey Chemezov, CEO of Rostec State Corporation said in an email statement Tuesday.

“The technical and scientific groundwork laid by NPP Start has given Technodinamika a head start in implementing the project,” Sergey added.

Specialists currently test the missile, designed to intercept targets in the upper atmosphere. According to the plan, the transfer of the system to the armed forces is scheduled for 2020. It is a universal long-range, high-altitude intercept system with an enhanced missile defense capability.
