Lockheed Martin is being awarded a $553 million modification contract to produce Lot 9 and Lot 10 interceptors, one-shot devices, and provides associated production support efforts.
The value of this contract is increased from $273 million to $826.6 million. This modification also includes a $459 million option for additional Lot 10 interceptors and one-shot devices, US department of defense said in a statement Friday.
The Theater High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) Interceptor consists of a kill vehicle and a booster. The THAAD Interceptor is a key subsystem of the THAAD Weapon System. The THAAD Weapon System provides Combatant Commanders with a rapidly-deployable ground-based missile defense system that complements the Ballistic Missile Defense System.
THAAD defends against short- and medium-range ballistic missiles, provide high firepower and sustainability for resistance to simultaneous attack by multiple tactical ballistic missiles, endo and exo-atmospheric intercept capability, and a high lethality with hit-to-kill. THAAD is a highly-mobile and transportable weapon system and is interoperable with other Ballistic Missile Defense systems.
