Boeing has been awarded a $64 million worth contract to restart the stand-off land attack missile - expanded response (SLAM-ER) production line in support of the government of Saudi Arabia, the Department of Defense announced Tuesday.

Boeing is also required to provide the redesign of obsolete, nearly obsolete, or uneconomical parts to support production and improve future sustainment of SLAM-ER, the statement says.

According to Boeing, The Standoff Land Attack Missile Expanded Response (SLAM ER) is a low-cost, low-risk upgrade to the SLAM, which is designed to provide surgical strike capability against high-value, fixed land targets, ships in port, or ships at sea. SLAM ER can be launched from safe standoff ranges of more than 150 nautical miles.

According to the release, work will be performed in St. Charles, Missouri; and other locations, and is expected to be completed in March 2019.

A Standoff Land Attack Missile — SLAM — is a missile dropped from an aircraft that can attack land and sea targets at short-to-medium-ranges. It can be controlled remotely and change direction at any time.
