The United Engine Corporation (UEC) has developed a more powerful engine for the Mil Mi-28NM ‘Night Hunter’ attack helicopter.

"The safety, functionality and flight characteristics of the combat helicopter have been considerably increased by furnishing the VK-2500P engine with the upgraded automated control system," Rostec which is the holding company of UEC said in a statement quoted by TASS.

The flight tests of the VK-2500P engine were held on the Mi-28NM prototype. Currently, the Klimov United Engine-Making Corporation is beginning the serial production of the new powerplant, Rostec said.

Compared to its VK-2500 baseline version, the VK-2500P features the modernized automated control system and the engine’s capacity has been increased from 2,700 hp to 2,800 hp in its emergency power mode and from 2,400 hp to 2,500 hp in its take-off regime and the engine’s service life before major repairs has been extended by a third, Rostec said.

Rostec Executive Director Oleg Yevtushenko was quoted as saying, "the new engine and its ‘digital filling’ considerably increase the ‘Night Hunter’s’ performance characteristics and make it one of the best in the world in its class."

The Mi-28NM is a modernized version of the Mi-28N ‘Night Hunter’ helicopter. The work on the helicopter’s new modification started in 2009. The Mi-28NM is expected to get a principally new panoramic view locator, a new control system and other equipment and will be capable of using precision weapons. The helicopter is designated to strike the armor, carry out reconnaissance and provide target acquisition. The Mi-28NM prototype is undergoing state trials.
