MBDA Deutschland and Lockheed Martin, the Tactical Air Defence System (TLVS) bidders consortium, have submitted an updated proposal for Germany’s future Integrated Air and Missile Defense system (IAMDS)

The proposal was submitted today to the German Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw). The proposal includes development, test, certification and delivery of the IAMDS.

A broad spectrum of industrial capabilities is to be involved covering.., cybersecurity, digitization, radar, optical and electrical engineering. With these capabilities the TLVS program will ensure defense against advanced and future air and missile threats,” said Thomas Gottschild, managing director MBDA Deutschland.

“In the last months we made progress in further detailing the Integrated Master Schedule, relevant specifications as well as performance simulations to de-risk the future contract,” he added.

Current threats demand a mobile IAMD system that is full 360-degree capable and based on an open network-centric architecture. Only the TLVS system has these capabilities and the ability to rapidly adapt to the ever-changing threat environments.

“The TLVS is a demonstrated, modern system that can transform Germany’s defense capabilities and enable Germany as the NATO Framework Nation for Air & Missile Defense,” said Scott Arnold, vice president, Integrated Air and Missile Defense, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control.

Designed to replace Germany’s aging Patriot systems designed in the late 1960s, the 2020 TLVS proposal provides protection from a broader threat spectrum with two mission-specific effectors, significantly enhanced sensor capabilities for long range engagements and a new communications and Battle Management system to support enhanced interoperability, data fusion and cyber resilience, an MBDA release said.

The TLVS includes a long-range radar, as a search and surveillance sensor with an active phased-array antenna with digital beam forming for the detection of very small targets within 360° and depiction of the local air picture.

The long-range radar is optimized to detect ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, manned and unmanned aerial vehicles, and helicopters. A multifunction fire control radar (MFCR) detects and tracks targets within 360°, and also classifies, discriminates and identifies targets down to the platform level.

The phased-array antenna of the MFCR also guides the PAC-3 MSE missiles to their targets. At that point, the seeker head of the missile locks onto the target and the guided missile destroys the target with a direct hit.
