Greece is First European Nation Decide on French Rafale Jets: Def Minister Parly

In its decision to acquire Rafale fighter jets, Greece became the first European nations to announce plans to buy jets from France breaking more than a decade long jinx where European nations have ignored the Rafale in favor of the Eurofighter Typhoon and the F-35.

Welcoming the Greek move, French defence minister Florence Parly today said, “the decision of the Greek government to acquire Rafale aircraft confirms the success of an export policy resolutely turned towards Europe. France is continuing its action in favor of a stronger, more autonomous and united defense Europe, in accordance with the strategic orientations of the President of the Republic."

This choice in favor of a Dassault Aviation combat aircraft, at the highest level of world technology, strengthens the link between the Greek and French armed forces, and will allow them to intensify their operational and strategic cooperation, the statement said.

Ed comment: France took the lead in an European initiative to shift dependence away from the United States in matters concerning military procurement. The recent decision of Germany not to consider the F-35 and instead buy the Eurofighter Typhoon as its lead fighter is an indication of a new policy to keep big defence purchases within Europe.

While Dassault has found success in Egypt, Qatar and India, the Rafale has not won any contract in Europe so far. But that could be about to change with the Greek announcement with hopes of future fighter jet purchases by other European nations going in favor of the Rafale.
