Navantia, Telefonica Tasked to Develop Cybersecurity Systems onboard Spanish Navy’s S-80 Subs

Navantia and Telefónica Tech have begun to work on the development of a reinforced cybersecurity system for the Spanish Navy’s S-80 class submarines.

Navantia and the Ministry of Defense have worked on the design of an advanced system that will be incorporated into submarines in the final phase of construction.

The cyber defense solution will share a high communality with the one that will be incorporated into the F-110 frigates, whose construction will begin soon. Both systems, the one for the S-80 and the one for the F-110, will be developed by Navantia with Telefónica Tech as a partner in its Cybersecurity division.

Navantia will supply the cyber defense cabinets for each submarine in the series, will carry out the development of systems engineering and security engineering and the integration of the submarine's main systems in cyber defense. In addition, laboratory test environments or LBTS (Land Based Test Site) will be provided for the development and qualification of the cyber defense system.

The S-80 Cyber Defense will provide the submarine's main systems with protection against cyber-attacks or intrusion attempts. In addition, it will monitor, in real time, the operation of the combat system, the integrated platform control system and the advanced communications system, alerting to the detection of any possible threat.

Its advanced registration system will allow forensic analysis to be carried out, which will allow the study of incidents to identify their origin, the degree of the threat and the mechanism used for the intrusion to adopt the pertinent corrective actions.

Navantia and Telefónica already announced last March an agreement to jointly design, develop and commercialize cybersecurity and comprehensive technological security services, including both the S-80 and the F-110 within the scope of the agreement. The two companies presented their collaboration at the International Defense and Security Fair (FEINDEF) held in Madrid.
