A Russian Black Sea Fleet frigate destroyed a Bayraktar TB2 drone off the Crimean coast using its latest Shtil anti-aircraft missile system, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
“Two missiles from the frigate’s Shtil anti-aircraft missile system destroyed a Ukraine-operated Bayraktar TB2 drone which was on a reconnaissance mission," the Russian Defense Ministry (MoD) said today.
"The UAV was carrying out reconnaissance of Black Sea Fleet ships, as well as coastal and ground positions of military equipment of the Russian Armed Forces located on the Crimean peninsula and in the southern part of Ukraine," a MoD statement said.
A TV footage of the launch of two missiles from the frigate was released on the Russian MoD’s TV channel, Tvzvezda.tv.
Details about the Shtil shipborne Air Defense Missile System (ADMS) was announced only in June 2021 at the10th International Maritime Defense Show (IMDS) in St. Petersburg.
According to information released during the event, it provides Omni-directional air defense of ship squadrons and convoys, as well as the individual defense of ships. Missiles of the systems are self-guided, single-stage, with solid-stage engine and are launched automatically from rapid-firing cellular vertical start launchers. The engagement zone for Shtil-1 is 3.5 – 50 km.
