S.Korea, U.S. Fire 8 Ballistic Missiles into East Sea Day After Pyongyang's Missile Launches

South Korea and the United States fired eight ballistic missiles into the East Sea today in response to North Korea's missile launches the previous day.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the allies launched ground-to-ground Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles from an eastern coastal region in Gangwon Province today morning for around 10 minutes.

The North shot eight short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) – likely the KN-23 modeled after Russia's Iskander –   from four different locations into the East Sea on Sunday. This followed South Korea-U.S. naval exercise last week involving an American aircraft carrier.

"Our military strongly condemns the North's series of ballistic missile provocations and seriously urges it to immediately stop acts that raise military tensions on the peninsula and add to security concerns," the JCS said in a press release.

Shortly after the North's launch of three ballistic missiles on May 25, including an apparent intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), the South and the U.S. conducted combined missile launches in their first such joint move since 2017.
