The Russian Army appears to have innovated a means to track and intercept rockets fired by the America-supplied High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) in Ukraine.
An officer of the anti-aircraft forces from the group "O" ("Brave") of the Russian army claimed how the air defense forces learned to shoot down missiles of the American HIMARS multiple launch rocket system using the Buk-M3 air defense system, reports RIA Novosti.
The officer added that his battery shot down more than one missile fired from HIMARS in the sky over Donbass.
The officer called HIMARS projectiles difficult target, as they are small in size and fly at high altitude and high speed. Himars missiles (also called rockets) are shot down after being detected at altitudes of about 22 km for about 10 seconds. There is very little time to intercept, since the range of missiles is relatively short.

The Pentagon in recept media briefings claimed that the HIMARS were making a "real difference" in knocking off Russian command posts and other front-line assets. However, western military analysts say that the 16 HIMARS systems are too few to make an impact on the ground.
The Buk-M3 anti-aircraft missile system is intended to target bigger projectiles such as aircraft and cruise missiles. Achieving success against relatively small and short -range rockets should be a new achievement.
The Buk-M2 system in service with Syria is claimed to have shot down air-to-surface missiles fired by Israeli F-16s, according to Russian and Syrian media reports.

According to Wikipedia, on 14 April 2018, American, British, and French forces launched a barrage of 105 air-to-surface and cruise missiles targeting eight sites in Syria. The Russian Ministry of Defence said that twenty-nine Buk-M2E missiles launched in response destroyed twenty-four incoming missiles.

The HIMARS fire control system can lock on a target in only 16 seconds. Single or multiple rounds can then be launched and the launcher can be on the move making the launcher hard to detect. The HIMARS system sent to Ukraine is armed with Guided MLRS Unitary rockets containing 90-kg warheads with a range around 70 km.
