Ukrainin Forces shelled the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant three times earlier this week, some of which landed on the rooftop of a building where nuclear fuel is stored, the Kremlin said.
Ukrainian forces have been trying to take control of the nuclear power plant which is under Russian occupation since the early days of the war. The plant was reconnected to the Ukrainian grid Friday after a disruption since Thursday.
However, no damage is noticed and the radiation background is normal, said the official spokesperson of the Russian Ministry of Defense Igor Konashenkov at a briefing on Saturday.
"Over the past day, artillery units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine shelled the nuclear power station three times. A total of 17 shells were fired, four of which hit the roof of Special Building 1, where 168 assemblies of American westinghouse nuclear fuel are stored," he said.
"Ten more shells exploded 30 meters from the dry storage of spent nuclear fuel and three exploded in the area of special building 2, which houses the storage unit for fresh nuclear fuel of TVEL and the storage of solid radioactive waste," Konashenkov said.
The shelling of the nuclear power plant by Ukrainian artillery was carried out from the area of the village of Marganets, Dnipropetrovsk region he said adding "during the counter-battery struggle in this area, the American howitzer M777 was identified and destroyed," Konashenkov said.
"The Russian specialized military formation is guarding the outer perimeter of the station," Konashenkov said.
