Bird Hit, Equipment Failure Caused Recent Crashes of Russian Su-34, Su-30SM Jets

Equipment failure and piloting error are considered as the reasons of the crash of a Su-30SM fighter in Irkutsk on Sunday, while a bird hit in one of the engines downed a Su-34 fighter jet on October 17.

The telegram channel of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation (TFR) reported on Monday, "the investigation is considering two main versions of what happened: the failure of aviation equipment and piloting error," the report says.
The crash of the Su-30SM aircraft meant for the Russian Aerospace Forces, which was a pre-delivery check flight, occurred on Sunday in a residential sector of Irkutsk, both pilots died. A 200-square-meter fire broke out at the crash site that damaged a one-story semi-detached house. There are no casualties among the residents.

An Su-34 fighter-bomber crashed in Yeysk in southern Russia after one of its engines burst into flames, the Russian Defense Ministry reported.
"On October 17, 2022, a Su-34 aircraft crashed upon a climb during its training flight from a military airfield in the Southern Military District. The plane crashed within the city limits of Yeysk," the ministry said in a statement.
A later statement from the TFR said that the accident occured as the result of a bird injestion into one of the engines. Nineteen people perished when the apartment complex on which the aircraft crashed was engulfed in flames.
