Thales has announced that the Government of Canada has granted an in-service support (ISS) contract for Minor Warships and Auxiliary Vessels (MWAVs) to Thales Canada and Thales Australia in a joint venture.
This contract is designed to maintain the operational readiness of the fleet and offers the flexibility to adjust the number of vessels serviced to meet the operational requirements of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN), including Operation REASSURANCE, Canada's most extensive overseas mission for NATO assurance and deterrence in Central and Eastern Europe.
It encompasses an initial service period of five years, valued at up to $450 million CAD (approximately €305 million), with the possibility of extending services for a total of up to nineteen years.
Thales also provides ISS for Canada's Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS) and Joint Support Ships (JSS), known as AJISS. This positions Thales as the primary ISS provider for the RCN, responsible for ensuring the readiness and availability of 26 different vessel classes and over 100 ships.
Thales is collaborating with Indigenous businesses and communities, such as the Malahat Nation, as well as start-ups, academia, Canada's innovation superclusters, and small and medium-sized enterprises through various programs like AI@Centech, SYNERGY, Naval Technology Innovation Challenges, and its newly established National Digital Excellence Centre.
