L3Harris Technologies, Korean Air, and Israel Aerospace Industries' ELTA Systems Ltd. (IAI/ELTA) are collaborating to provide the Republic of Korea (ROK) Air Force with the next generation of high-altitude airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft.
The Korea AEW&C team, with a two-decade track record, has previously delivered special mission aircraft, including Italian Air Force CAEW and Israeli Air Force CAEW, maintaining mission availability rates above 90 percent.
The proposed ROK Air Force AEW&C solution is designed with a mission system operating in multiple theaters, ensuring a capability with low development and sustainment costs. Utilizing a modular open systems approach (MOSA) digital backbone allows for affordable and swift upgrades to address evolving threats and operational requirements.
The AEW&C solution is based on L3Harris' platform design using Bombardier's Global 6500 high-altitude business jet, integrating IAI/ELTA's advanced radar technology and artificial intelligence algorithms.
The team emphasizes a Korean-led initiative post-delivery, with Korean Air leading engineering, in-country modification, testing activities for aircraft three and four, and sustaining the program. L3Harris' agreements with Korean partners ensure full support in Korea for aircraft and mission system equipment.
The initiative aligns with L3Harris' broader portfolio of multi-mission business jet solutions, supporting global security missions, including programs for the Royal Australian Air Force, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, Republic of Korea Air Force, Japan Coast Guard, and bids for international projects.
The partnership not only delivers advanced AEW&C capabilities to the ROK but also paves the way for independent domestic research and development, contributing to the advancement of the ROK's research and development program.
The first two aircraft will undergo structural modifications in Texas before integration and radar testing at an ELTA facility in Israel, showcasing a commitment to excellence in aircraft system integration, upgrades, and modifications.
