The Royal Thai Air Force will induct the JAS 39 Gripen E/F to replace its aging F-16 A/B fighters in a procurement project.
This decision is a key step in the RTAF's ongoing efforts to modernize its capabilities in line with national defense strategies, the RTAF announced on its Facebook page.
The procurement project, covering the fiscal years 2025-2029, is the first phase of the RTAF's plan to replace the Type 19/K (F-16 A/B) fighter aircraft at Squadron 102, Wing 1.
These aircraft have been in service since 1988, totaling over 36 years, as noted in the Royal Thai Air Force Whitepaper 2024.
The selection of the replacement fighter aircraft was detailed and careful, ensuring it enhances current capabilities, integrates with existing infrastructure, and supports future development aligned with the Air Force and Royal Thai Army's strategic goals.According to the RTAF's Facebook post
After 10 months of evaluation, the JAS 39 Gripen E/F was chosen over the F-16 for the RTAF. It meets tactical needs, supports operational independence, and aligns with network-centric operations for future multi-domain defense, working with the Royal Thai Armed Forces and other security agencies.
