The Spanish Army’s Battlefield Management System (BMS), developed by Indra and Thales, is undergoing enhancements aimed at improving its processing capacity and overall performance.

Deployed in 2021, the BMS has been critical in enabling commanders to make swift, informed decisions based on real-time data.

The planned upgrades are focused on handling the increasing volume of data exchanged between platforms and systems. This will support smooth operation in increasingly digitalized tactical environments.

Additionally, the BMS is designed to meet NATO’s Federated Mission Networking (FMN) standards.

Thales Projects Director Juan José Forteza highlighted the importance of interoperability with other allied armies, facilitating the integration of command and control networks between different nations.

The system allows commanders to issue orders and oversee operations in real-time, providing field units with a comprehensive mission overview via digital mapping. This enhances coordination through the exchange of tactical information, images, and messages. Key improvements include increased processing power, a more lightweight system architecture for tablet use, and integration with the Army’s Logistics Management System (SIGLE) to optimize vehicle maintenance.

The BMS has demonstrated its effectiveness in live operations, such as NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence (EFP) Mission in Latvia.
