South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), in collaboration with STX Engine, held a ceremony to mark the rollout of South Korea's first domestically produced engine for the K9 self-propelled howitzer.
The event took place on Friday, September 27, at the STX Engine Changwon Plant and was attended by officials from DAPA, MOTIE, STX Engine, and Hanwha Aerospace.
DAPA and MOTIE initiated the development of the domestic engine in 2021, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in September 2020 aimed at localizing key defense materials and components. A total investment of KRW 32.1 billion ($24.4 million), including KRW 22.8 billion ($17.3 million) in government funds, was made. Over the course of three years, approximately 500 core engine parts were localized and mass-produced.
The new engine is intended to enhance the K9’s global market potential due to its improved performance and economic efficiency. The engine is also designed to be independently exportable, further supporting South Korea’s defense industry.
In addition to this project, DAPA and MOTIE plan to collaborate on developing next-generation defense technologies, including hydrogen fuel cells and aircraft engines.
