"Today two tankers, Volgoneft 212 and Volgoneft 239, were damaged due to a storm in the waters of the Black Sea. There are 15 people on board one ship and 14 people on the other. The damage caused an oil spill emergency," the Russian Federal Agency for Sea and Inland Water Transport said Sunday .

According to a TASS report, the tankers, carrying nearly 9,000 tons of mazut (fuel oil), were caught in the storm and reportedly sustained catastrophic structural damage.

The foreship of one vessel was torn off by powerful waves, and both tankers ultimately sank in the Kerch Strait.

There were 15 crew members on board Volgoneft-212 and 14 on Volgoneft-239.

Eleven injured crew members have been hospitalized in Anapa, with two in grave condition, according to Alexey Kuznetsov, an aide to the Russian Health Minister.
