Russian T-90, T-72 Tanks Underwent Over 100 Changes Due to Ukraine Operations
UVZ delivers final 2024 T-90M 'Proryv' and T-72B3 tanks to Russian troops.

Russian tank manufacturer Uralvagonzavod (UVZ) has announced upgrades to its T-90M Proryv and T-72B3 tanks, with over 100 modifications introduced since the onset of military operations in Ukraine.

These changes address evolving battlefield challenges and aim to enhance the tanks' combat effectiveness and survivability.

UVZ, the leading supplier of armored vehicles to the Russian Armed Forces, confirmed in a press release that its 2024 production goals were met with the delivery of the final batches of T-90M Proryv and modernized T-72B3 tanks to the Russian Defense Ministry.

The modifications implemented include anti-drone protection nets, additional armor for the stern, engine, and transmission compartments, and rubber-reinforced protective layers. These upgrades aim to counter threats posed by loitering munitions and anti-vehicle drones. To reduce detectability, the tanks were equipped with advanced camouflage and electronic warfare systems designed to neutralize drone attacks.

"A tank from early 2022 and one from the end of 2024 are practically two different combat vehicles. The protection systems now account for challenges that emerged from the first days of the special military operation,” Alexander Potapov, General Director of Uralvagonzavod, commented.

The rapid adoption of modifications was facilitated by round-the-clock work from UVZ’s designers and production teams, who integrated updates into ongoing assembly processes.

The Centre for Analysis of World Arms Trade (CAWAT) noted that the real-world combat testing of Russian weapons, including the T-90 and T-72 tanks, boosts their appeal in the global arms market. CAWAT predicts growing demand for Russian military products, citing their demonstrated adaptability to modern warfare and “superior” field performance compared to Western counterparts.

Footage from the conflict has highlighted the vulnerabilities of Western-made tanks, such as the Leopard and Abrams models, which reportedly struggled against Russian artillery, anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), and drones. Observers pointed to the operational complexity and high maintenance requirements of Western tanks as additional disadvantages.

UVZ reported consistent growth in production throughout 2024, with November marked as a particularly productive month.
