The U.S. State Department has approved a potential $39 million sale of Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles with Extended Range (JASSM-ER) and related equipment to Japan.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified Congress of the proposed sale.

The Japanese government has requested to purchase up to 16 AGM-158B/B-2 JASSM-ER missiles, along with support systems, training equipment, and integration services. Non-major defense equipment (non-MDE) components included in the package are dummy air training missiles, containers, anti-jam GPS receivers, and a range of logistical, technical, and software support. The principal contractor for the sale will be Lockheed Martin.

The Pentagon said the proposed sale will improve Japan’s capability to meet current and future threats by providing stand-off capability via long-range strike systems for employment on Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) fighter aircraft, including but not limited to the F-15J and F-35A/B.

The JASSM-ER acquisition will bolster Japan’s ability to address security challenges, particularly amid growing regional tensions involving China and North Korea. These long-range missiles are designed to engage targets from outside adversary strike zones, providing a strategic standoff capability.

The U.S. approved a $104 million JASSM-ER sale to Japan in August 2023, followed by a $3.23 billion Lockheed Martin contract for JASSM procurement for multiple countries including Japan in September 2024.
