United Arab Emirates-based defense group EDGE has signed a $2.45 billion contract with Kuwait for the delivery of eight FALAJ-3 class offshore patrol vessels, in what the company described as one of its largest regional defense agreements to date.
EDGE confirmed the multi-billion-dollar deal will cover the design, construction, sea trials, logistics, and long-term technical support for the patrol vessels. Each of the 62-meter-long ships is designed to operate in both coastal and open waters and can be equipped with a range of weapons, including missiles and rockets. The company noted that the ships are capable of defending against threats from all directions.
The FALAJ-3 class offshore patrol vessel was previously developed for the United Arab Emirates Navy, with the first unit launched at Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB) in January this year. Under the new contract with Kuwait, EDGE will act as the prime contractor and ADSB will lead construction as a subcontractor.
