Italy Inducts New M-345 Jet Trainer to Replace MB-339

The Italian Air Force has officially introduced the Leonardo M-345 trainer aircraft, designated T-345A, into its fleet, replacing the long-serving MB-339.

The induction of the new jet took place at the 61st Wing in Galatina.

The M-345 joins the M-346 trainer at the same base, providing a complete training system from basic to advanced phases (Phases II and III). Both aircraft are produced by Leonardo at its facility in Venegono Superiore, Varese.

The aircraft is designed to offer the performance of a jet trainer while maintaining operating costs similar to those of a high-end turboprop, offering efficiency without compromising capability.

Equipped with a Williams FJ44-4M-34 turbofan engine, the M-345 is tailored for military use, delivering high performance and low fuel consumption. The aircraft also includes an integrated health and monitoring system to extend operational life and reduce maintenance downtime.

Its digital cockpit features a Head-Up Display (HUD) and three color Multi-Function Displays (MFDs), paired with HOTAS (Hands On Throttle-And-Stick) controls and stepped tandem seating, enhancing flight training realism.

Beyond the aircraft itself, the M-345 forms part of a broader Integrated Training System (ITS), which includes a full suite of ground-based simulation and training solutions.
