Denmark Fast-Tracks $390M Deal for Ammunition, EW Systems, Armored Vehicles, Medical Equipment

Denmark has approved a fast-tracked defense procurement worth 2.7 billion kroner (approximately $390 million) to boost the combat readiness of its heavy brigade, bringing forward deliveries of ammunition, electronic warfare systems, armored vehicles, digital guidance tools, and medical evacuation equipment.

The decision, approved by Minister of Defense Troels Lund Poulsen, follows a recommendation from the Chief of Defense and is aimed at advancing the country’s defense preparedness in light of the evolving security situation in Europe.

The early acquisition includes ammunition, digital guidance capacity, electronic warfare systems, armored vehicles with heavy mortars, and CBRN decontamination equipment. It also brings forward medical capabilities to improve the brigade’s ability to conduct evacuation, surgery, and life-saving treatment during operations.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the move will allow parts of the brigade to be ready up to two to five years earlier than originally planned. The procurement is being funded through Denmark’s Acceleration Fund, which supports urgent military needs.

Defense Minister Poulsen said the initiative is part of Denmark’s response to increasing defense pressures in Europe. “Europe is facing a changed security reality, and therefore the building of the Danish Armed Forces' combat power is being accelerated, so that we both increase national defense and collective deterrence,” he said. He added that whether through strengthening existing capabilities or fast-tracking new ones, the goal is to build combat power as quickly as possible.

A significant portion of the funding—1.4 billion kroner—is being allocated for ammunition stockpiling, while 1.25 billion kroner will go toward digital and electronic systems, armored vehicles, and decontamination capacity. Medical equipment accounts for 0.8 billion kroner, aimed at enhancing the brigade’s resilience on the battlefield.

The acceleration is seen as a critical step in strengthening Denmark’s defense posture and ensuring the 1st Brigade can meet its national and international obligations more effectively.
