Kalashnikov Concern has announced the modernization of its 7.62 mm AK-308 assault rifle, with production of the updated model scheduled to begin after it completes qualification tests.

Developed by the company’s Design and Technology Center (DTC), the new version builds on the original 2018 model, which was designed for international customers using the 7.62x51 NATO (.308 Winchester) cartridge.

The AK-308 was initially developed using the AK-12 platform. However, after modifications were made to the AK-12 based on its deployment in combat operations, Kalashnikov specialists decided to apply similar improvements to the AK-308. The new design incorporates several structural changes aimed at improving reliability, ergonomics, and compatibility with modern sighting and accessory systems.

Among the updates, the rifle now includes a lengthened forend to enhance grip during firing. It also adopts a folding, adjustable buttstock similar to the one used in the latest AK-12 variant, designed to accommodate various shooting positions. A reinforced receiver cover equipped with a long Picatinny rail supports optical, collimator, and night sights, allowing the rifle to be used effectively in both day and low-light conditions. The detachable magazine now has windows that allow the user to visually check the number of rounds remaining. In addition, the diopter rear sight has been updated with rotating apertures for improved aiming in different lighting environments.

The AK-308 retains its compatibility with NATO-standard 7.62x51 mm ammunition and uses a long-stroke gas piston system. The rifle weighs 4.3 kilograms with an empty magazine and has a 415 mm barrel. It supports both semi-automatic and automatic fire modes and has a firing rate of 700 rounds per minute. Other features include a slotted flash suppressor, standard Picatinny rails on the handguard for mounting accessories, and a folding polymer stock adjustable for individual shooter preferences.

The rifle’s sighting range reaches up to 800 meters, and it allows the installation of a bayonet knife. However, it does not support under-barrel grenade launchers or integrated bipods. Cleaning accessories are stored in the handle and butt of the weapon.
