Fincantieri has been awarded a €700 million contract to construct two new PPA-Multipurpose Combat Ships for the Italian Navy.

The new ships will take the place of vessels originally intended for delivery to the Indonesian Navy and are scheduled for handover in 2029 and 2030.

The updated contract falls under the most recent Naval Act and is managed by OCCAR (Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d’Armement), within the Temporary Business Grouping formed by Fincantieri as the lead contractor and Leonardo as its partner. The deal includes the value of works already completed on the earlier vessels, which will now be transferred to Indonesia.

Both new vessels will be delivered in the “Light Plus” configuration and will be built at Fincantieri’s Integrated Shipyard facilities in Riva Trigoso and Muggiano. The ships are designed to carry out multiple roles, from patrol and rescue operations to civil protection and combat.

The PPA-Multipurpose Combat Ship follows a modular design approach that allows future upgrades. It is built on a common platform and can be equipped for a range of missions. The ship can operate high-speed RHIBs up to 11 meters in length using cranes or a stern hauling ramp, and it includes the ability to supply drinking water and electrical power ashore. The vessel measures 143 meters in length, can exceed speeds of 31 knots, and accommodates 171 crew members. It features a combined diesel and gas turbine propulsion system, with additional electric propulsion capabilities.
