From September 1 to December 1, the Netherlands will deploy F-35 fighter jets to Poland to support NATO's airspace surveillance over Eastern Europe, the Dutch Ministry of Defence announced on July 7.
The Dutch jets will operate jointly with a Norwegian F-35 detachment as part of NATO’s quick reaction alert mission, designed to intercept potential airspace intrusions 24/7.
The deployment follows a request from the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), NATO's central command in Europe. NATO will oversee the operations directly.
Dutch Defense Minister Brekelmans stated, “It is essential that we make our contribution to the defense of NATO territory and the security of Europe. By deploying these Dutch F-35s to monitor the airspace above Eastern Europe, we protect military equipment that is destined for Ukraine.”
The mission aims to deter Russian threats while ensuring that military equipment donated to Ukraine by NATO countries reaches its destination without interference.
“The presence of our F-35s allows us to respond quickly to violations of NATO airspace. As seen recently in Estonia, this deterrent effect is both necessary and effective,” Minister Brekelmans added.
The joint air policing operation reflects NATO’s ongoing efforts to enhance air security in the region amid continued tensions near its eastern borders.
