Brazil has reportedly officially decided to suspend negotiations with India over the purchase of the Akash air defense system and is now exploring a potential deal with Italy for the EMADS (Enhanced Modular Air Defence Solutions) system.

This is according to a report by Forças Terrestres.

Talks with India reportedly reached an impasse after Brazil was offered an earlier version of the Akash system, which lacks the enhancements found in the newer variant co-developed with Israeli firms. The older model was considered insufficient for Brazil's evolving defense requirements.

The Akash system, developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is a medium-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) platform designed to intercept aircraft, helicopters, and drones at ranges up to 30 km and altitudes of up to 18 km. It uses a command-guided missile and has a maximum speed of Mach 2.5, but the earlier model lacks more modern features like active radar homing and networked targeting.

In contrast, the EMADS system uses CAMM and CAMM-ER missiles featuring active radar homing, soft vertical launch, and 360-degree coverage. CAMM-ER missiles offer an extended range of up to 45 km. EMADS is modular and scalable, enabling integration with other sensors and effectors. It is designed to counter threats from aircraft, cruise missiles, and drones.

These missiles are also planned to be deployed on Brazil’s new naval frigates, which would simplify logistics, maintenance, and training. Officials are also considering agreements for local production of the missiles as part of the Italian deal.
