Saab has signed a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) worth SEK 60 million ($6.3 million) to develop a Large Uncrewed Undersea Vehicle (LUUV).
The project aims to create a new underwater system to enhance seabed surveillance and support future maritime defense needs.
Under the agreement, Saab will serve as the prime contractor, leading the design, construction, and testing of the LUUV. The company’s Autonomous Ocean Core system, which provides autonomous navigation for both surface and subsurface vessels, will be integrated into the vehicle. The first sea trials are scheduled for summer 2026.
The LUUV is being designed as a sensor platform rather than an armed vehicle in its initial phase. Its role will include seabed mapping, infrastructure monitoring, and the detection of potential underwater threats. Officials emphasize that the system will support decision-making for operators and strengthen Sweden’s ability to safeguard critical maritime areas.
