A Russian S-300 air defense unit operating in the Ukraine conflict has shot down a Ukrainian F-16 fighter jet, its commander has claimed.
Speaking in an interview broadcast on Russia 1 television, the commander, identified by the call sign “Sever,” said the aircraft was destroyed by a modernized S-300 air defense system using two missiles during what he described as a coordinated operation. He stated that the unit received the upgraded system in December 2024 and completed training by March 2025, after which it began engaging what he termed high-value aerial targets.
“We have downed a colossal number of targets—we've lost count. These include ATACMS missiles, HIMARS rockets, guided aerial bombs, and other aerodynamic targets. The most interesting one was the F-16,” Sever said during the interview. “Our opponent praises these aircraft highly, claiming they are nearly indestructible. It turns out they can be shot down just the same.”
According to Sever, the F-16 engagement followed extended surveillance and coordination at the brigade level. “We tracked it and waited for a long time, coordinating with the brigade commander. It took two missiles: the first hit it, and the second finished it off,” he said.
Colonel Alexey Zhirkov, commander of the air defense missile brigade, used the same broadcast to compare Russian systems with Western-made air defense platforms supplied to Ukraine. He claimed that Russian systems, including the S-300, were more capable than their NATO counterparts.
“Their Patriot system is a very old design, which, in my opinion, has simply been forced upon all NATO countries,” Zhirkov said. “Our systems have significantly higher tactical and technical characteristics. Our developers design them anticipating the future evolution of aerial threats.”
Ukraine has not publicly commented on the specific claim of an F-16 loss, and independent verification of the incident was not available at the time of reporting.
