Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) announced Thursday that damage to Kuwait’s airport was caused by a US Patriot missile that missed an Iranian drone headed towards a U.S. base some 40 km from the airport.
The government of Kuwait has blamed Iran for targeting the Kuwait International airport that led to the death of one Indian citizen and injuries to 66 others.
IRGC Spokesman Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi said that investigations show the IRGC Aerospace Force had not fired at the Kuwaiti airport terminal.
“The destruction of the Kuwait airport passenger terminal was caused by an error in American Patriot systems, which came down on the terminal after failing to intercept Iranian drones and missiles,” he asserted.
In the early hours of Wednesday, the IRGC announced it had launched missiles and drones against the US Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain, a US Air Force base in Kuwait and other American military assets in the region.
The strikes were in retaliation for a US raids on an Iranian vessel in the Gulf of Oman and for a US attack on a communications tower South of Qeshm Island.
Fars News Agency said quoting its sources that a security camera video shared by Kuwait’s Civil Aviation Authority lays bare the US and Kuwaiti claim, "The IRGC's drones were launched at American targets in Kuwait at midnight while the time in the clip refers to an incident during daylight."
"The distance between the target hit by the IRGC's drones and Kuwait Airport is more than 40 kilometers which discounts the possibility of miscalculation of the drones' trajectory," he added.
Similar incident in Bahrain
A similar incident took place in Bahrain earlier. While the U.S. and Bahrain accused Iran of targeting a residential building, an amateur video showed a missile smoke trail from the ground leading up to the building and not from the sky if it were to be an Iranian missile.
While Patriot interceptors can track aerial targets, their accuracy depends upon the attacking missile’s size, speed and trajectory. Drone can be closely maneuvered to avoid being in the line of fire of fire of the Patriot interceptors. Iranian missiles are small in size and capable of high speed which can cause the Patriot systems mistrack them.
