One of America’s latest air defense systems, the Mobile Anti-Air Weapons Launcher – Reconfigurable (MAAWLR) made by Sierra Nevada Corp (SNC)., has been spotted doing anti-drone duty in Ukraine.

The complex was captured on video by a Russian drone, the footage of which was published on the Telegram channel "Severny Veter."

Sierra Nevada Corp first demonstrated this anti-aircraft missile system in September 2025 during the Air, Space & Cyber Conference.

It is quite likely that the system has been shipped to Ukraine for testing in real battle conditions.

The MAAWLR/BRAWLR system has a modular design and can be used both in a stationary version and  on pickup trucks or trailers. The mobile version is called MAAWLR, while the stationary one is known as BRAWLR.

A complete BRAWLR/MAAWLR field deployment kit includes a launcher, a pickup truck prepared for its installation, a supply of missiles, and a local radar station.

A unique feature of the system is that it is capable of using a wide range of missiles, including AIM-9M, AIM-132, AIM-120, IRIS-T, P-27 and APKWS II.

The system can carry up to 46 APKWS missiles and hit targets at a distance of up to 6 kilometers.

Depending on the ammunition used, the MAAWLR is capable of hitting air targets at distances from 6 to 15 km.

Last year, it was reported that Sierra Nevada's MAAWLR/BRAWLR systems had helped a classified operator shoot down more than 400 aerial targets since 2023.

When creating MAAWLR, the company set a goal to develop a highly adaptive system that would avoid the need to deploy a large number of

launchers from different manufacturers.

The MAAWLR is part of SNC’s Rapidly Deployable Air Defense and C-UxS Family of Systems. MAAWLR integrates commercially available subsystem components with military-grade sensors, communications, and effectors into a hybrid, open architecture, and rapidly reconfigurable expeditionary area air defense system. MAAWLR is designed to adapt and evolve in dynamic and unpredictable operational environments with hyper-flexible hardware, software, communications, and data interfaces.

“The system is capable of independently detecting, tracking, identifying and destroying air threats or augmenting existing systems, increasing range and kinetic destruction capabilities,” Sierra Nevada Corp’s product literature said.
