Egypt showed its  Antey-2500 anti-aircraft missile (an advanced version of the S-300VM) during the opening of the new Octagon defense center in New Cairo.

Also seen were Ka-52 helicopters, to complement the air defense system with the ability to quickly destroy low-flying UAVs and protect SAM sites from sabotage and reconnaissance groups, forming a comprehensive defense system for a strategic facility.

The Antey-2500’s  key component is the 9S19M2 Imbir software surveillance radar, capable of detecting targets with a low radar cross-section (down to 0.02 square meters) on ballistic trajectories in a specialized sector mode, which is critical for countering threats in a complex jamming environment.

It is paired with the 9S32M multi-channel missile guidance station (MSGN), equipped with a phased antenna array, which enables simultaneous tracking and engagement of up to six targets, maximizing the battalion's high throughput.

While it was not earlier known when Egypt acquired the Antey-2500, its presence at the “Octagon” highlights the importance given to this Russian-origin system to guard its skies.

The Antey-2500 is expected to provide complete coverage of the air situation over the Suez Canal and the capital. Thus, Egypt has effectively created an A2/AD access denial zone, relying on the unique characteristics of Russian systems, which combine the ability to intercept aeroballistic targets with the highest jamming immunity of onboard computers and radar systems.

The Octagon -- named after eight interconected octagonal buildings, representing the eight branches of the Egyptian army -- is the largest military HQ in the world.

According to Egyptian authorities, the complex brings together military command, crisis management and secure communications systems to improve coordination and decision-making during emergencies.
