Radio communications in a battlefield will soon adopt a cellular model now that ITT Exelis has upgraded its SpearNet Radio. The enhanced hand-held radio can provide large amounts of voice, data and video communications over a self-forming and self-healing ad hoc network which will work like a cell phone while maintaining communications without reconfiguration or dropped calls. SpearNet uses a wideband direct sequence spread spectrum to provide users with eight times the voice, data and video that can be moved from the dismounted soldier to the commander making it s a throughout radio. “Many of today’s conflicts are waged as part of the invisible war on the battlefield with successful militaries controlling and dominating the electromagnetic spectrum,” said Chris Bernhardt, Exelis executive vice president and president of the Electronic Systems division. “This significant increase in the ability to move vital data for command and control purposes coupled with the new ability that is the equivalent of ‘roaming’ provides an overwhelming advantage for SpearNet users.” The radio’s features include a new roaming feature that been widely used in Afghanistan. The radio retains all the military features such as resistance, jamming and encryption.
