Raytheon company has been awarded a $125 million contract by the U.S Air Force and the MDA (missile defense agency) to modernise and add new capability to the Airforce early warning radar system. The contract will include signal and data processor for the existing Upgrading Early Warning Radar at Beale Air Force Base and will provide high-powered mission-critical radar, early warning of missile launches and space surveillance, targeting data that is used to shoot down incoming ballistic missiles. The project work is expected to be completed by 2017. Dave Gulla, vice president of Global Integrated Sensors for Raytheon's Integrated Defense Systems business, said, “Our experience as the designer and developer of the proven EWR, and our experience upgrading EWR systems in California, the U.K. and Greenland, enable us to provide the government a low-risk solution at a very competitive price”. The EWR will utilise phased-array radar face and add enhanced electronics and software to improve performance and target detection.
