Battle of the Badass Bombers

The United States flew its big bombers- B-2 Stealth and the B-52 Stratofortress in areas close to where the Chinese navy was conducting drills in the South China Sea (SCS) during July-August 2020. In response, China too operated its H-6 bombers over waters near Taiwan and the contested waters of the SCS.

What is it about these big bombers that make them the preferred choice of aircraft when it comes to muscle flexing especially when they are vulnerable to missiles fired from the ground and air much more than fighter jets?

In a way large bombers are like warships that are used for force projection due to their high visibility factor, long operational range and the ability to carry large ordnance including nuclear weapons.
