Turkey has received the first set of S-400 air defence systems defying US threat of sanctions and removal from the F-35 fighter jet program. Defenseworld.net profiles the timelines of this event which is sure to trigger fissures within the NATO alliance.

The delivery comes in the face of the United States threatening "consequences" including sanctions under the Countering American Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATA) and eliminating Turkey from the F-35 fighter jet program of which Turkey is an important production partner as well as a customer of about 100 jets.

Turkey has already paid $1.2 B as its share to buy the F-35 jets and it is not clear what the Pentagon will do with this money if it cancels the deal.
