Jimmy Lau, Managing Director of Experia Events, organizer of IMDEX Asia

In an interview with Defenseworld.net, Jimmy Lau, Managing Director of Experia Events, organizer of IMDEX Asia discuss the latest edition of the defense expo.

DW : What will be the highlight of IMDEX Asia 2013 among its other features?

Jimmy Lau : We are constantly innovating and upgrading to bring more value to our delegates and exhibitors at IMDEX Asia.   One of the new highlights of IMDEX Asia 2013 will be the onsite demonstrations of Unmanned Aerial Systems, which have been fast gaining ground in the industry. IMDEX Asia 2013 will also feature a Danish Pavilion, led by Naval Team Denmark, making a return to the show with an even larger presence after their debut in IMDEX 2009. The Danish Pavilion will bring together top companies such as Terma, Desmi, Nordic Defence Industries, Odense and DC-Supply.     IMDEX Asia 2013 will also play host to the first-ever Asian edition of the International Naval Engineering Conference and Exhibition, INEC@IMDEX Asia. INEC has established itself as one of the world’s foremost forums for solutions-based discussions on naval technology and engineering issues that are of strategic relevance to navies around the world.   The inaugural INEC@IMDEX Asia is themed ‘Transforming Naval Capabilities – Riding the Next Technology Wave’. It aims to complement the biennial INEC in Europe with a greater emphasis on naval engineering issues in the Asia Pacific region, using the opportunity provided by IMDEX Asia, with its attendant naval delegations, major industry players and trade visitors, to generate high level exchanges and discussions.   Returning highlights include the Warships Display, an impressive line-up of warships from all over the world, and the Static Display, which will showcase ridged-hulled inflatable boats (RHIBs), unmanned aerial vehicles and helicopters. Also held in conjunction with IMDEX Asia 2013 will be the International Maritime Security Conference (IMSC), which will gather Navy Chiefs, senior naval officers and Coast Guard Directors-General to address strategic security and safety issues.

DW : How will first time exhibitors fare with more experienced companies showcasing their products simultaneously?

Jimmy Lau : IMDEX Asia offers all exhibitors, whether returning or first-time participants, a wealth of opportunities to springboard into the Asia Pacific’s flourishing naval and maritime industry. This year, we are pleased to welcome new exhibitors such as Fincantieri, Luerssen, Scania, Schiebel and Westport Shipyard alongside returning exhibitors such as DCNS and Lockheed Martin.

DW : Do you expect defence budget cuts to affect show participation?

Jimmy Lau : Given that the Asia Pacific region recently surpassed Europe as the world’s second largest naval market, we are optimistic that exhibitors and delegates recognise the value of tapping into this high growth region. As Asia Pacific’s only dedicated international maritime defence show, IMDEX Asia continues to be their platform of choice and a must-attend event. It plays host to the largest gathering of high-level official delegations, comprising military and government officials as well as leading players in the region and beyond, providing opportunities to network, do business and participate in solutions-based discussions focused on pressing issues facing the industry. As a testament to the importance of the show, over 80% of the exhibition space has already been booked.
