The US has approved a $3 billion possible sale of 17 Osprey aircraft and support equipments to Japan.

The sale would support the Japanese Self Defense Forces (JSDF) with capability to operate closely with the U.S. and extend the range of their ground forces, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on Tuesday.

“The proposed sale of V-22B Block C Osprey aircraft will greatly enhance the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force’s humanitarian and disaster relief capabilities and support amphibious operations,” DSCA added.

“This sale will promote burden sharing with our ally and interoperability with US forces.” DSCA said.

The Osprey aircraft, which combines the vertical take-off and landing capabilities of a helicopter with speed of turboprop aircraft, has been used in humanitarian responses and to support expeditionary assault. It has also been used for raids, lifting cargo and other operations.
