Moscow-based defense experts have introduced an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven automatic target-tracking and locking system that allows drones to operate without human control once a target is identified.

The new technology makes drones immune to electronic warfare (EW), ensuring they remain on course even if communication signals are jammed.

"In our latest models being used in the ongoing special military operation, we've integrated AI-based automatic target-locking systems into traditional radio-controlled drones equipped with analog video feeds," a defense industry insider was quoted as saying by TASS. "This upgrade allows the drone to autonomously pursue a target once identified by the operator, even if electronic jamming or loss of video occurs."

The source explained that after an operator locks onto a target—such as an armored vehicle or structure—the drone continues tracking it independently. He added that the system played a role in operations at Chasov Yar with the Boomerang drone series.

Production of these AI-equipped drones began between November and March. The system works by recognizing visual contrast, such as a vehicle silhouette or building outline. Early versions could lock on within 200 meters, while newer iterations extend the range to 1 kilometer. Operators can refine the strike point, such as selecting a tank’s track or a building window, without disengaging the autonomous mode.

In addition to expanding operational range, the AI targeting reduces battery consumption by at least 25%, extending mission endurance.
