The last cache of 48,401 rounds of small arms and medium calibre ammunition surrendered by former Niger Delta militants was destructed as part of the disarmament phase of the Nigerian amnesty program.

The disarmament program was conducted by the Presidential Amnesty Office along with the Nigerian Army and National Security Advisor, New Telegraph Online reported Tuesday.

The destruction is part of the second phase of ‘Exercise Thunder Peace,’ started in 2009 and took place at the sixth battalion Nigerian Army.

Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, retired Brigadier- General Paul Boroh, described the exercise as a watershed in the sustenance of peace in the Niger Delta.
