North Korea Fires New Type of Short Range Ballistic Missiles

The Short Range Ballistic Missiles (SRBMs) fired by North Korea from its north-eastern coast into the East Sea early on Friday could be newly developed ones, the office of President Moon Jae-in, Cheong Wa Dae, has said after holding an emergency meeting in Seoul.

“On the basis of an initial analysis, the authorities of South Korea and the United States believe that the projectiles were new SRBMs,” Ko Min-jung, Cheong Wa Dae spokesperson was quoted as saying by Yonhap.

This is the third instance of Pyongyang’s firing of missiles in the past one week, with the missiles being similar in characteristics of flight to those launched on Wednesday.

North Korea describes the projectiles as “large-caliber rockets.” Pyongyang show of its military firepower is seen as a response to the US-South Korea military drill likely to be held next week.
