Embraer-190 Jet’s Engine Catches Fire Moments Before Take-off from Russian Airport

One of the two engines of the Embraer-190 narrow-body airliner reportedly caught fire moments before taking-off from Khabarovsk Novy Airport located in southeastern Russia on Friday.

"At around 7:45am local time (12:45am Moscow time), when preparing for a Khabarovsk-Magadan flight, an engine of the Embraer-190 aircraft (Ikar Airlines) caught fire when turned on. The fire was localized by airport services. Eighteen passengers and 5 crew members were evacuated, no one was injured," the press service of the Far Eastern Transport Prosecutor's Office reported.

Stranded passengers of the Embraer flight will fly to Magadan (eastern Russia) at 10:55am local time (3:55am Moscow time) on a flight operated by the Avrora airline, TASS reported.

Far Eastern Transport Prosecutor Vitaly Kaplunov visited the site of the incident and ordered to look into possible violations of flight safety measures.

The E190 and E195 jets are powered by General Electric-made GE CF34-10E civilian high-bypass turbofan engines, rated at 18,500 lb (82.30 kN).  These aircraft compete with the Bombardier CRJ-1000 and Airbus A220-100, the Boeing 717-200 and 737-600, and the Airbus A318.
